Falling Asleep

There, there little ones. Hush, do not make a sound. No need to be alarmed. Nothing bad will happen to you. Just go to sleep now.

Go to sleep. You’ve done all that you can and let’s face it you’re not going to make that much of a difference that matters. Why put in all of that effort when they won’t listen? Why go to all of that bother when they might pay attention at first but they’re only going to revert to their old ways? Why? You’ve been flogging a dead horse, really. Just accept that it’s a bit much and do the thing we’re all supposed to do when we’re exhausted – nod off, go to sleep.

Go on, dear, just nod off to sleep. Don’t worry about anything here. Nothing will happen to whatever you prize here, it’s alright. No one will do anything. We all understand why you’re in this condition and so it makes perfect sense to just fall asleep. Hey, you always said you could do those functions and activities in your sleep and now you can do that. You can ease off the throttle, go into autopilot and let things just cruise from there. You don’t have to be alert or alarmed about anything. Just do the same old, same old. It’ll be fine. Go on, dear, just let the sleep wash over you.

Yes, let that sleep wash all over you. After all, you know you’re in the right, anyway. That should be enough. Keep that posture of looking down on the others around you who are descending further and further away from your standard of what’s right. Look down on them and tut with sorrow at their demise seeing that there’s little you can do other than reassure yourself that at least you’re right. Console yourself with that. Comfort yourselves with that and hold it firmly like a blanket that will softly coddle you to your rest and you need not worry at all. For I have just the deal for you.

Here’s the deal. We know you have your religious beliefs. We get that. No one is stopping you from having those beliefs. You hold onto that. But you know they’ll make no real difference in this world. You know that, right? So, you know, you can keep that to yourself in your little holy huddle keeping yourselves warm with your quaint weekly rituals and sincere and earnest practices among yourselves. You keep that going. Nothing wrong with that. As long as it doesn’t interfere with what everyone else chooses to do. Carry on with your singing and your praying and whatever, just don’t let it affect how you relate to others. Ease off from all of that. Let other people do whatever they want to do and, you know, just keep your quaint views spawned from old texts that are irrelevant now, to yourselves.

You know we’re just looking out for your best interests, right? You know we’re doing it because this is how we’ll get a real peaceful life going. You do your religious jigging and singing in the privacy of your own spaces. You nod off from the state of everything around you because, you know, you can’t do anything to change it anyway. And we will carry on and not even bother you.

There, there little ones. Hush, do not make a sound. No need to be alarmed. Nothing bad will happen to you. Just go to sleep now.

  1. An interesting take on the slumbering life, Chris. Hmm… some guy called Paul mentioned a hymn from long ago. The words were along the lines of:

    Wake up sleepy head
    Get up, rise from death
And Messiah will shine on you.
He’ll light you up like the midday sun!

I’d so love to hear that hymn one day, don’t even know the tune. But the words ring out clearly enough!
