There are times when I feel like my life is a mess. Everything in disarray and I do well just to survive the day. Jeez, it can feel too much sometimes and I throw up my hands and look up wonder why. So much for being a child of God and all that.
Then I have conversations like the one I had recently. In talking with this dear friend, he encouraged and shared from his life. He is great because he listens and he riffs. By that I mean he can talk from his hand and express himself freely without having to limit himself. As he speaks he shares nuggets of wisdom worth treasuring. One of those made reference to life being like a jigsaw puzzle. When I thought about what he said it made a whole heap of sense.
There are the broken pieces of shattered lives within and without. Little idea of what it’s supposed to look like. Broken bits and pieces strewn around. Some only live to cast pieces further away, but God in His loving-kindness sends people, ushers in experiences, puts in moments of life where some things begin to fit together and take shape. It gives an indication of beauty in a bigger picture complete in displaying what creation was meant to be from the beginning. As we get those glimpses as those pieces come together, life is more purposeful. Even when those pieces depict something sad, it is part of something bigger that allows for that but is not limited or defined by that. Life then is a jigsaw puzzle where God invites us to look to Him to help us make some sense of the pieces and patiently learn to wait on Him to let the picture come together even as we serve others in putting pieces back together.
It’s not a simple package like that, but it is a helpful picture that helps us endure when it just seems like one big mess.
